Scottish Emergency Maternity Care Course For Non-Maternity Professionals
Background
The purpose of this course is to support the wider multi-professional group of health-care staff who may be involved in emergency maternity situations arising outside the specialist maternity service environment across Scotland.
The overall aim is to provide these individuals with supplementary knowledge and skills necessary to help them deal appropriately with maternity care emergencies.
By undertaking this course non-maternity health-care professionals will be able to:
- Describe the roles, responsibilities and their scope of practice of each of the professional groups in the available team.
- Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of related professional, legal and ethical issues,
- Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the normal development of pregnancy.
- Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the processes involved in labour and delivery

Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of risk management including risk assessment.

Demonstrate an awareness of the commonest emergencies related to maternity care and the initial management possible in a non-maternity care setting.

Communicate refer and transfer appropriately.
The pre-course workbook will provide candidates with all the core learning resources required to complete the first part of the course. There are numerous activities, scenarios and assessment quizzes that are required to be completed as the pack is worked through. They are designed to identify local resources, contact, policies and encourage multi-professional working and sharing of knowledge in each respective local area.
A workshop day will be organised once the pre-course reading, activities and quiz assessments have been completed.

Course Aim
The overall aim is to provide non-maternity specialist health care staff with the supplementary knowledge and skills necessary to help them deal appropriately with maternity care emergencies.

1 instructor per 4 candidates (skill stations and workshops). To comply with the SMMDP quality measures their must be one external member included in the faculty.

Non-maternity healthcare professionals who may have to respond to a maternity care emergency. This includes A&E nurses, GP Practice Staff, Out of Hours Staff, Ambulance technicians particularly in remote locations but not exclusively.

Course Instructors
Instructors must have completed a Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course or if they have previous appropriate education training and are on the SMMDP database as an instructor. All instructors must comply with the SMMDP Code of Practice for Instructors
