Scottish Core Obstetric Teaching and Training in Emergencies Course Background
The Scottish Core Teaching and Training in Emergencies (SCOTTIE) Course Course has been developed to provide a standardised training course in managing emergencies for all health-care professionals who participate in the care of pregnant women. The course has been designed to cover the fundamental aspects of maternal emergencies and is suitable for all maternity-care professionals working in all care environments in Scotland.

‘SCOTTIE’ is one of the skills-based courses developed and rolled out by the SMMD Programme in support of maternity-care professionals across Scotland.

Course Title

Scottish Core Obstetric Teaching and Training in Emergencies (SCOTTIE) Course


Course Aim
The aim of the course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to respond appropriately to emergencies in pregnancy and childbirth.
Course Learning Outcomes
Candidates will be able to:
• Develop an understanding of the physiological processes that can lead to emergencies in pregnancy and childbirth
• Practice the immediate management of emergencies in a simulated clinical setting.

Course Pre-Requisites
It is essential that candidates are familiar with Adult BLS and have completed an Adult BLS course in the previous 3 years.

Assessment, communication and referral
Obstetric haemorrhage
Pre eclampsia and eclampsia
Maternal resuscitation
Shoulder dystocia
Twins, breech
Cord prolapse and uterine inversion 
A & B of neonatal resuscitation

Minimum Number of Instructors to Participants

1 instructor to 4 candidates (skill stations and workshops).  To comply with the SMMDP quality measures there must be one external trainer included in the faculty.  This will be organised by the SMMDP Office.
Course Instructors
Instructors must have completed a Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course or if they have previous appropriate education training experience and are on the SMMDP data base as an instructor. All instructors must comply with the SMMDP Code of Practice for Instructors.
The instructor(s) leading the maternal CPR sessions must be ALS trainers (UK Resuscitation Council).

Not more than 50%

As obstetric emergencies require a multiprofessional response it is expected that midwifery, obstetric, anaesthetic staff, general practitioners, ambulance personnel will benefit from this training courses.
